This antique timepiece, hailing from the prestigious Waltham Watch Company, was produced between 1887 and 1910. The model number 1872 Riverside 16s 15j refers to its specifications: a 16-size case, a 15-jewel movement, and the Riverside design.
The watch's 16-size case is a testament to its elegance and refinement. Measuring approximately 50mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness, it offers ample space for the intricate mechanical workings within. The case is crafted from a high-quality material, such as gold or silver, and is adorned with intricate engravings and decorative elements, depending on the specific version. The watchback is typically secured with a screw-down mechanism for added security.
The 15-jewel movement is the heart of this vintage watch. The presence of fifteen jewels in the movement mechanism reduces friction and ensures smooth operation, resulting in greater accuracy and reliability. The movement also features a lever escapement, a balance wheel, and a mainspring, which powers the watch. The dial, often featuring Roman or Arabic numerals, is protected by a crystal glass and is illuminated by a luminous material, such as radium or tritium, for easy reading in low light conditions.

The blued steel spade hands are really nice. There is a small gap when the bezel screwed tight but it seems to hold see photo. The bow fit is nice and snug. The watch runs very well and keeps good time.
The nickel open face case is a true model 1872. The threads are a bit stubborn but will screw tight. The nickel plated movement is clean with beautiful damasking and polished steel screws. It does show some wear with minor scratches and a couple small dents on the back.
The movement winds and sets properly with the set lever. The single sunk dial is nice and clean with only the faintest hairline from to top of seconds bit. There is spotting on one winding wheel. There is a small cut on the edge of case back see photo.
