The Waltham 10232923 1901 8S Pocket Watch, also known as the "Royal 20 Filled Wind," is a classic timepiece with a rich history. Here are some pros and cons to help you make an informed decision about purchasing this watch:
Pros:1. Historical Significance: Waltham Watch Company was one of the leading manufacturers of pocket watches in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Owning a Waltham pocket watch is a way to connect with horology history.
2. Manual-Wind Mechanism: The Royal 20 Filled Wind watch features a manual-wind mechanism, which allows the user to wind the watch manually whenever needed, ensuring continuous operation.
3. 20-Jewel Movement: The watch's 20-jewel movement ensures smooth and accurate timekeeping, reducing the need for frequent adjustments.
4. Timeless Design: The classic pocket watch design is a timeless accessory, perfect for formal events, collections, or as a gift.
5. Durability: Pocket watches, in general, are more durable than modern wristwatches due to their solid construction and lack of moving parts that can be easily damaged.
Cons:1. Requires Regular Winding: Since the watch is manual-wind, it will require more attention to ensure it stays wound and running.
2. Not Everyday Wear: Pocket watches are less practical for everyday use compared to wristwatches, as they require removing them from a pocket and opening the lid to check the time.
3. Maintenance: Pocket watches require more frequent maintenance compared to wristwatches due to their complexity.
4. Limited Functionality: Pocket watches typically only display the hours, minutes, and sometimes seconds. They lack the additional features found in modern wristwatches, such as date displays, chronographs, and alarms.
Conclusion:The Waltham 10232923 1901 8S Pocket Watch, or the Royal 20 Filled Wind, is a beautiful and historical timepiece. While it may require more attention and care than a modern wristwatch, its classic design, durability, and accurate timekeeping make it an excellent addition to any collection. This is an old smaller size Waltham pocket watch. 14 does not make sense as far I know. I am not an expert on these. Case diameter is 1 5/8 and I am not certain about the 8s size designation where to measure exactly.
According to the tag it was made in 1901 and says either 14j or 19j I cannot read small writing. Case is in excellent condition. 19 seems unusual so please refer to photos.
